Breaking the Spell

International travel is a transformative experience.

It will make you wiser, kinder and more interesting. I encourage everyone to get a passport and take a trip.

But I also believe that it is especially important for black people to start traveling more. In most countries that I’ve been to, I can go days without seeing anybody that looks like someone in my family.

Consider for a moment that there are many black families whose entire lineage hasn’t left the United States since they were brought here on the bottom of a boat, in chains.

Just think about that.

Isn’t it time to break the spell?

This is so, so true! Even in my small circle of friends I’m always surprised when I hear that they’ve never even left the East Coast, let alone the country. We owe it to our ancestors to break the stereotypes and challenge the norms – plus, pizza is always better in Italy.
