Ever felt like that guy who endlessly delays his goals? You know the type:
- The one binge-watching House of Cards instead of tackling important work.
- The one saying, “I’ll start working out after the holidays” — after every holiday.
- The one with lofty dreams but an endless stream of excuses to justify the delay (“J.K. Rowling didn’t start Harry Potter until her 40s; I’ve got time!”).
I was that guy too, stuck in cycles of overthinking and inaction. But I broke out of it—and I want to show you how.
Here’s how I turned things around and tackled a massive project: creating a course on marketing strategies that I now use with my startup clients. Spoiler alert: it worked.
The Turning Point: Write It Down
You know that feeling when you write down an enormous goal on paper? It’s a mix of excitement and a little bit of “what am I getting myself into?” energy. That’s the spark. But turning that spark into sustained action? That’s the challenge.
When I wrote down my big goal, I had to quickly figure out how to turn that burst of motivation into a repeatable system. Here’s what I came up with:
1. What’s the Biggest Problem?
Momentum.
That initial wave of excitement and motivation? It’s fleeting. We’ve all felt it—the “I’m going to crush this!” high that fades when reality sets in. Without discipline, that momentum fizzles out fast.
2. What’s the Second Biggest Problem?
Consistency.
Even if I managed to start, I knew staying consistent over weeks and months would be a serious struggle. Tackling a big project requires sustained effort, and let’s be honest—keeping that energy up without a system in place is nearly impossible.
3. How Can I Solve These Two Problems?
Here’s the secret: You don’t need discipline to start. You need a system.
Let me break it down with a few quick questions for you:
- Remember those school assignments you hated?
- Or that paper you procrastinated on for days?
You still got them done, didn’t you?
Why? Because there was pressure.
In school, failing had consequences—grades, deadlines, punishments. You didn’t need discipline; the system (and the pressure it created) made you do the work.
This realization led me to a breakthrough:
The System That Works
Here’s what I came up with—a no-discipline-required system designed to bulldoze through these problems:
- Daily Task: Define a daily action that directly supports your goal.
- For me, this was:
- Write 1,000 words/day (December–January)
- Create 3 keynote presentations/day (February)
- Film and edit 3 videos/day (March)
- For me, this was:
- Accountability Partner: Find someone to hold you accountable.
- I picked my friend David, who’s also into personal growth.
- The Stake: Attach a meaningful consequence if you fail.
- I promised to pay David €200 if I missed even a single day. (High stakes = serious commitment.)
- Proof of Work: Provide tangible evidence daily.
- I sent David screenshots of my progress, like the word count of my document or completed slides.
Why This Works
This system is a Seinfeld calendar on steroids. It locks you into the present, focusing on what you need to accomplish today rather than obsessing over the big picture.
Here’s how it beats the most common excuses:
- “I forgot!” → Do it now, even if it’s late. Just don’t break the chain.
- “I’m tired…” → Too bad. Your stake is on the line.
The combination of accountability, high stakes, and daily proof creates unstoppable momentum.
Applying This to Your Goals
This method can work for any goal—learning a new skill, launching a project, or creating a habit.
Steps to Get Started:
- Define Your Daily Task: Break your goal into daily actions. Keep it simple.
- Example: Write 500 words, practice coding for 30 minutes, or do 15 minutes of exercise.
- Find Accountability: Choose someone reliable to check in on you.
- Set a High-Stakes Consequence: Make failing painful. (Cash works!)
- Show Proof: Send evidence of your work daily.
The Bottom Line
If you want to crush your goals, you don’t need superhuman discipline. You just need a system.
This approach worked for me, and it can work for you. So, what’s your big goal? What daily task will you commit to?
Remember: it’s better to commit to something than nothing at all. Take the first step today—and don’t break the chain.
